What is underlayment?

A thin foam or IXPE material layer installed under floating floors to reduce sound transmission and provide moisture protection between the subfloor and finished flooring.

Underlayment is a cushioning layer, typically made from expanded polyethylene (IXPE) or foam, that sits directly between your subfloor and floating floor planks. It serves two critical functions in residential and commercial installations across the Klang Valley region.

The primary role is sound dampening. As people walk across a floating floor, the planks naturally move slightly. Without underlayment, foot traffic transmits noise directly into the subfloor and down to the space below, creating hollow or echoing sounds. The foam or IXPE layer absorbs impact energy and reduces this acoustic transmission, making rooms feel quieter and more insulated.

The secondary role is moisture protection. Subfloors in Malaysia's humid climate can absorb moisture from concrete slabs or damp ground conditions. Underlayment creates a moisture barrier that prevents water vapor from rising directly into wooden or composite planks, which can cause warping, swelling, and dimensional movement. This protection is especially important in ground-floor installations where moisture risk is highest.

Most underlayment products range from 2-3mm thick and come in rolls that cover the entire floor area before planks are laid. Flooring contractors in the Klang Valley commonly specify underlayment as part of the floating floor assembly to meet warranty requirements and ensure long-term floor stability. Quality underlayment is a preventive measure that protects your investment against both noise complaints and moisture-related damage.
